The Issue:

Quick, which version of Internet Explorer do you use to access the web? Don’t know? Don’t care? You should, especially if you want to take advantage of all that RE/MAX and the internet have to offer!Time To Trash IE6

Let’s think back to 2001 for a minute. What was the internet like? Certainly much simpler than it is today.

Today it’s commonplace to access the internet on the go with netbooks, Blackberries, iPhones, and any number of other devices. In 2001, we pretty much only carried cell phones and used them for making phone calls. Today we take for granted on demand streaming video sites like RE/MAX University and robust interactive applications like the RE/MAX Design Center. In 2001, these technologies hadn’t even been invented yet.

Why 2001? That’s the year Microsoft released Internet Explorer 6 (aka IE6), their most popular web browser to date. At the time it was revolutionary piece of software that took advantage of the latest web technology, but in the past few years it’s really started to show its age.

So much so, in fact, that many popular websites like Google have recently announced that going forward they will no longer develop pages which are compatible with IE6. The same goes for the RE/MAX Design Center. Going forward the Regional Office plans to drop IE6 support on REgionCentral.

The Fix:
Bottom line? You need to upgrade. In 2006 Microsoft released Internet Explorer 7 to replace IE6 and three years later replaced IE7 with IE8. Microsoft currently recommends that all Windows users upgrade their web browser to IE8. This is a free upgrade via Microsoft’s website and only takes a few minutes.

Don’t get stuck in the past. Make sure you’re running the latest version of Internet Explorer!

Going Further:
Another alternative you may wish to consider is Mozilla’s Firefox browser. First released in 2004, Firefox is an open source web browser which has gained a great deal of popularity over the past six years. Currently, Firefox is the second most popular web browser behind Internet Explorer 8.

In fact, as of the writing of this article, Firefox is even MORE advanced than IE8, as it currently supports CSS3 and HTML5 standards, new web technologies that will be transforming the look and functionality of the internet in the coming years. If you want to explore even more possibilities with your web browser, check out Firefox, a free download.
