I would like to introduce you to a new weekly letter called the Three Minute Tech Tip.  This message is designed to give you a quick insight on some aspect of technology.  In future messages I will cover all sorts of items of general interest.  As always, feel free to contact Amanda or Troy at the regional helpdesk with any tech support question at help@remax-nj.net or (800) 828-7095.  OK, Time's-a-wasting so let's go......

SPAM - Everybody gets it, everybody hates it.  What can you do to keep these unwanted e-mails to a minimum? Here are a few tips.

1. If you use Microsoft Outlook, turn off the preview window of your e-mail browser. (VIEW, PREVIEW PANE on the menu bar)  Sure, it is convenient to preview mail without opening it, but did you know that some spam messages can validate your e-mail address simply by looking at them?  When this happens, you get added to even more spam e-mail lists and the problem grows.  You can identify most spam from it's subject line and strange return addresses, then delete them without opening.

2. NEVER unsubscribe from a spam message, unless it is a someone you previously asked to send you mail.  You are not actually unsubscribing from anything, just letting them know you are a real address, SO THEY CAN SEND YOU MORE JUNK.  Don't do it.

3. Don't send articles, e-greeting cards or other services from websites that ask for your's or your friend's e-mail address.  Ever wonder how these non-commerce sites make money?  They do it by selling your (verified) e-addresses to mail lists so they can send you MORE spam.  The obvious exception to this rule is trusted sites who protect your data with a specific privacy policy (like our regional website).

Time's up! Gotta go.  Hope you found these tips helpful.  E-mail me your comments.
